Michael (Mike) Nguyen has been working in the non-profit field since 2002, spearheading and leading summer camp, after-school, and health education programs with various non-profit community based organizations in San Jose, Los Gatos, and San Francisco. His recent role as Health Promotion Manager at A&PI Wellness Center in San Francisco allowed him to oversee programs and services for LGBTQ youth, A&PI MSM, and those living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS, all of which were integrated into both an on-site and mobile testing clinic providing HIV testing strategies. These HIV testing strategies include 1) Venue-Based Testing at bars and clubs and 2) Episodic Batch Testing at community fairs and special events. Along with these HIV testing strategies, Mike has created and implemented a Condom Distribution system for his team to ensure that at least 20,000 condoms are distributed annually community-wide.
Mike has co-chaired the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance (GAPA) and served on the City and County of San Francisco’s LGBT Advisory Committee (LGBTAC), a part of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission (HRC). Mike believes strongly in leadership development and creating pipelines for youth and young adults to connect and network into their professional careers as strong and healthy adults.
His goal is to one day work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Mike will be leaving for Zambia, Africa in June 2015 to serve as a Health Extension Agent with the United States Peace Corps. This blog captures his experiences from June 2015 to August 2017.
